Blueberries for Sal

Blueberries for Sal, 🫐 a family treasure from treasured friends in our lives.

Robert McCloskey’s books are all wonderful and this is certainly no exception here.

Sal and her mother go to blueberry hill to pick buckets 🪣 full of blueberries 🫐 for the winter ahead. Mother is doing a good job filling her pale, but Sal cannot help but eat every blueberry she finds. She goes all over the hill with a ka-plink, ka-plank, ka-plunk, as she drops her blueberries into her pale. Meanwhile, there’s another pair of mother and child on blueberry hill, filling their bellies for a long winter.

There’s a little mix-up, 👧🏼🐻 and a motherly scare and a question: how will mother find her little Sal on such a big blueberry hill? It may not be as tricky as she fears. She just has to listen 👂🏻.

McCloskey has a way of taking you, the reader, on a slow afternoon adventure, without making you want to rush to the end. The illustrations are so beautiful and there is no lack of color in the story. We’re always a little disappointed when it’s over. Thankfully there are more Sal adventures to read 📚

Sal and her Mother made fruit preserves with their blueberries, what should we make? 🫐👩🏼‍🍳
